Penny Norman (Ph.D. from UC Berkeley) has indeed created a superb line of children’s science kits, covering topics from energy to classic inventions, but none have been so in depth as Chemistry: Solids, Liquids, and Gases.
This particular kit ranges from the basics of chemistry (What is matter?) to some of the most essential concepts (e.g. understanding density).
Chemistry: Solids, Liquids, and Gasses contains the how’s and why’s for 35 classic childhood activities, including:
The basics of chemistry are presented in a child-appropriate manner without getting too vague or uninformative. Furthermore, aside from the projects in the book, the kit contains materials for many other projects. “...we couldn’t stand to leave them out,” says the introductory note to parents, “They are too much fun to skip.”
These include conceptually important projects with the water cycle on evaporation and condensation. As with many of Norman’s science kits, the learning goes above and beyond.
