GEMS: Science and Math Explorations for Young Children

Many GEMS guides for young children are developed by the PEACHES early childhood education program of the Lawrence Hall of Science. This handbook highlights the educational philosophy and practice of these programs and outlines successful strategies for building on play and creativity, using questions effectively, assessing learning, and reaching all students.

The handbook features numerous examples from GEMS guides as well as additional PEACHES units that may become GEMS guides in the future, along with anecdotes and comments from teachers involved in the program. A special section describes the strong emphasis placed on mathematics and a sample activity provides educators new to the program with an example of a typical lesson.
